Mental Health Conference
Until recently, ‘psychology’ and ‘spirituality’ have been treated as two unconnected concepts, relating to the realms of science and religion respectively. However, as society develops a more holistic understanding of ‘self’, there is a growing awareness of the complex interaction between these two phenomena. Consequently, the potential for recognising spirituality as a tool in the recovery process for mental illnesses is beginning to be realised.
The stigma attached to mental disorders has meant that the church has long remained silent on this matter. Yet at a time when statistically one in four people will suffer from such an illness, there is an urgent need to engage with this reality. The ideological shift described above requires a practical response from the church, as increasingly public health services are being encouraged to accept the possibility of a client’s spirituality contributing to their healing. We are thus faced not only with the question of how to acknowledge and minister to these people within our own pastoral care systems, but also with how we can serve local health services and facilitate their endorsement of church involvement in the healing process.
Complete healing can be found only in Christ; He is the model of compassion and love which brings freedom and wholeness. This conference will begin to address how we, as a church, can engage with the challenge of the proliferation of mental health illnesses that is facing all of society. We aim to empower church leaders and members to openly face the problem, equipping them to serve both sufferers and those working professionally in this area.
