Mental health, understood to be the ability to develop psychologically, emotionally and spiritually, has always been at the heart of the work at Hope’s Place. Recently, our ‘mental health’ interest has taken on a new dimension, as we have begun to explore the role of spirituality in mental health beyond our usual confines of pregnancy-related problems.
We are aware that the church has often upheld the stigma surrounding mental illness, when it could have provided support for those most in need. We are seeking to change this situation, by equipping churches to engage in the area of mental health and openly respond to those who are mentally unwell.
We are also in the process of establishing friendship groups for those experiencing extreme isolation as a result of chronic mental illness. These groups will provide a sympathetic, social environment and support sufferers in finding a way out of the cycle of isolation.
